Have you ever met a person who behaves like a machine;
Someone Who thinks fast,
Multi tasks all the time,
Who’s here, there and everywhere!
An encounter with such a person might seem to be a rare occurrence indeed!
But as unlikely as it seems; it is very much possible.
You can find similar traits in people who would appear to be regular joes while concealing extraordinary gifts within them.
They can completely amaze you with the way they work.
However, for most of them, it would be as simple as breathing!
Individuals such as these not only work harder than most, they also know how to hack their minds to over perform and achieve success with minimal effort.
Today, I will reveal three techniques that will help you mimic their mental capabilities and achieve mastery over the mind. These mental hacks will enable you to trick your brain out of procrastination and turn you into a force to be reckoned with!
1. EMOTIONAL REGULATION
The First thing you need to do is to consider your mind as a separate entity.
You can look at it as
- your friend,
- a colleague,
- a mentor,
- Or even an accountability buddy.
Someone that you can have a chat with!
And as much as this may seem like strolling into the realm of insanity; detaching from your mind and talking to yourself begins the process of emotional regulation.
It starts with;
- Forming clarity with yourself on why a task that you need to do could be SO important to you.
- Then emotionally explaining to yourself about the intensity of your possible sentiments and exhilaration upon the completion of that task AND vice versa the disappointment and regret at failing to complete it.
This way your mind and body will be in sync and you will be able perform faster and better.
2. TEMPTATION BUNDLING
The Second approach to hacking your mind is to set up a reward system for yourself.
BUT should those rewards be ONLY for a job well done?
I DON’T THINK SO!
What if you could indulge in your guilty pleasures and work at the same time!
It is like tricking your brain into doing boring jobs but with fun.
Personally, I believe in making rewards of taking action more immediate.
This technique is called Temptation Bundling.
The concept revolves around attaching rewards with actions – one that is good for you in the long run and one that is gratifying at that very moment!
Basically, DO THE THING THAT YOU LOVE TOGETHER WITH THE THINGS THAT YOU DO NOT LOVE.
Similar examples could be:
- Listening to music song as you exercise,
- Or watching a popular streaming show while packing your online shipments,
- Or even eating a well-deserved snack or a delectable chocolate bar all the while you try to complete a difficult job at the desk.
3. MICRO PRODUCTIVITY
Finally, break all your big projects into several micro tasks so that you can check them off your list quickly.
Doing this will have a magical effect on your mind,
BECAUSE
Your brain will love these small achievements.
And while it may seem like celebrating mediocrity, the act of quickly completing tasks would have a domino effect as you achieve one small goal after the another until your entire project gets done.
This is micro productivity.
It is not something that works for me alone – modern science corroborates it as well.
Nor does it only result in a higher level of completion of tasks but your brain responds favorably to it as well.
Another benefit of breaking down large projects is that it can help you keep track of work as well as identify which task to do next.
AND that’s not all!
Completing small tasks will trigger a constant flow of feedback to your brain at more frequent intervals resulting in a positive impact on your mind, mood and motivation.
It is said that upon completion of every individual action, the brain receives a dose of dopamine which induces the feelings of pleasure and motivation.
In a way, micro productivity is a form of mental therapy while you work!
Alternately, only trying to complete large long term projects might have a nearly opposite negative effect on your brain.
Finally, breaking large tasks into small actions makes it easier to check them off the list, which leads to those elevated moods and push in motivations which I mentioned earlier, allowing you to make more progress towards reaching your final goal.
So, how can you go about implementing this master technique in your life?
The following are the 5 Steps you should keep in mind to make micro productivity work for you:
- Look at the big picture – what is the end result of the overall project?
- Determine a step-by-step roadmap that will help you reach where you need to go.
- Figure out how you can break that down work into bite-sized chunks that you can realistically complete in a single sitting.
- Think about the logical order of completing each element → which task will come 1st, then 2nd and then 3rd and so on. Also, what materials you may need, what research you are required to do and what resources need to have at hand in order to complete that task in one go.
- Create a timeline for completing your tasks because having a deadline would encourage you to be more focused as the exact end date would be right in front of you.
These are the 3 tricks you can use to make your brain more efficient!
And with the conclusion of today’s session, I want to say something sincerely.
As you will employ micro productivity in your work, you may find completing small tasks to be not only tedious but also leading to no end.
Because there is always so much to do in a larger overall project and completing micro tasks can seem pointless.
BUT I promise you,
If you follow the five micro productivity steps that I mentioned above,
you WILL become consistent and eventually good at the project that you are doing – making it seem like an easy task holistically.
And that’s all for today.
